Coastal walkers urged to stay vigilant for grounded seabirds

Coast walkers are being urged to keep their eyes open for grounded Manx Shearwater birds as they fledge from Pembrokeshire's islands and prepare to fly out to sea towards the south Atlantic.

Every autumn, many of the birds end up becoming stranded on the mainland after becoming confused and heading off in the wrong direction.  Experts believe this could be the result of artificial lighting along the coastline, or the result of storms.

Manx Shearwaters are unable to take off from land, so as a result, they become grounded.  This makes them vulnerable to predators and vehicles.

If you find a grounded Manx Shearwater, place the bird carefully into a well ventilated cardboard box whilst wearing gloves, close the lid and place it somewhere quiet and undisturbed.  Then contact either of the regional representatives, namely Ali, who covers the north of the county (Cardigan to Little Haven) on 07771 561606 or Dave who covers the south (St Brides to Amroth), on 07766 911069.
